You are of course right in saying that Land was the direction GAR wanted to take his zombies, and that's certainly his call. I still think there is plenty of mileage in the old fashioned 'dumb' zombie and hope to see more films in this vein, that's purely personal taste of course, I'd still enjoy seeing Riley and Charlie in another film, I'm decidedly curious about what they will find up North.
I hadn't really given much thought to Dawn 04 as a 'starting film' probably because I've not seen any independent films - the only 'starting films' I've seen are NOTLD (original and remake) and Dawn 04, so perhaps it hasn't gotten quite so old with me yet. I found the first few minutes of Dawn 04 to be very enjoyable, and wish that the initial pace could have been maintained.
My major gripe with Dawn 04 (and Land to a lesser degree) was the brevity of the film, which I felt stifled the character development, and the lack of screen time for the undead (Dawn 04 only of course!).
I agree that things didn't look good for the motley bunch that landed on the island (except for the dog perhaps  ) - even if they ended up as zombie snacks I would still have enjoyed another excursion into that partiularly bleak and dangerous world.
I think that's one of the things I enjoy about the GAR films; the number of smaller stories going on in the background that we can only imagine. Such as, whatever happened to those cops in the motorboat in Dawn 78, or the two scientific spokesmen? Or the hunting parties out in the wilds. Or the major bunkers in Washington that Sarah hinted at in Day. I'll never know, but I enjoy wondering! |
