Last Man On Earth
(© Daniel Lee)

Page 2

Thunder cracked in the distance, a flash of lightning streaking out across the sky.  The wind started to swirl over my head.  I looked up and smiled at the shining silver disk spinning above my head.  A long metal arm reached down and unfolded into a step under my feet.  I nodded to the glassy eye that followed the step down and steadily felt myself glide into the sky above the Cross, above the Mole Hill and all the world as the first drops of rain began to fall.

Within moments of securing the rose and myself I was looking through a port hole at the storm.  The black clouds had formed funnels filled with spiraling debris and flashing pops of lighting.  And as soon as it had come it was gone, and in its wake there was nothing but a haze of dust.  The city was gone.

"Did you get it," the captain asked over the speakers.  "Did you get it?"

"One rose."  The answer seemed unsatisfying.  In those rotting hulks of concrete and metal had been a story, a history.  All of it forgotten in a few short minutes of wind and water.

As we floated into the atmosphere and beyond I looked down at the brownish globe covered in dark clouds and flashes of light.  I was the last man on earth, the last man that would ever be on earth.

It felt hollow.
