What If Roger Survived: Alternate ending to 'Dawn'
(© Bryan Way)

Page 3

PETER: We need to clean up. It's gonna reek soon.

ROGER: What'll we do with 'em?

PETER: I figure the ideal spot will be those big freezers in the basement.

STEPHEN: I think Fran's getting sick.

ROGER: What makes you think that?

STEPHEN: I don't know, she's been weird lately.

PETER: Probably the pregnancy.

STEPHEN: I guess.

Cut to scenes of the men wheeling the bodies around in wheel barrels. They take them all to one freezer which has been cleaned out. The bodies are packed tighter than a can of sardines. Stephen brings in the last load as Roger and Peter look at the corpses.

PETER: Ah, shit. Someone say something.

STEPHEN: I'm speechless.

ROGER: Well, who wants steak for dinner tonight?

Stephen and Peter try to hold back their laughs. Soon they give up and burst into laughter. They start to walk away and Peter turns out the lights. After a few seconds, Roger runs back to the door. He looks around cautiously and locks the door. Cut to a montage of scenes, the group enjoying the fruits of the mall. They gleefully plunder every store in the mall, enjoying gourmet foods, trying on expensive clothing and jewelry, and shooting hoops in the sporting goods aisle. Fran gives Stephen a haircut; when he playfully acts upset about the cut, she "shoots" him in the head with a hairdryer. The guys play primitive video games in the mall's arcade. Fran skates all alone on the ice rink. Roger tries on various expensive hats. Stephen and Peter take stacks of cash out of a drawer in the bank, grinning happily at the security camera, which snaps their picture. Roger is examining and sampling foods. Peter is trying on an assortment of clothes. Stephen looks at books in a bookstore. Fran rummages through the cosmetics department. Cut to the quartet standing at the balcony. Peter has a suitable 'pimp' outfit, and Fran has a new mink coat. The concourse is empty of corpses, but the group can hear the moaning and thumping at the main entrances. It is dark outside, the Zombies claw at the doors but cannot be seen in the shadows under the big trailer trucks. The sound evidences their presence, however. They listen to the Zombies trying to get in.

STEPHEN: They're after us. They know we're still in here.

PETER: They're after the place.

FRAN: What the hell are they?

PETER: They're us, that's all. There's no more room in hell.

STEPHEN: What?

PETER: Something my granddaddy used to tell us. You know macumba? Voodoo. Granddaddy was a priest in Trinidad. Used to tell us, 'When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth.'

ROGER: Hell must be pretty full.

Cut to the living quarters. Fran and Stephen are watching the television. On the television, two men are talking, a commentator and a scientist. The scientist is in a suit, but his tie is rumpled and his collar open. He has an eye patch over his right eye. He has not shaved and he seems very tired and nervously upset.

DR. RAUSH: I'VE GOT TO BE CAREFUL WITH WORDS HERE. WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO STUDY THEIR HABITS. WE'VE REPEATEDLY ASKED FOR A LIVE CAPTURE SO WE CAN HAVE CONTROLLED STUDY. WE NEED SUPPLY AND DEMAND RATIOS.

COMM.: YOU MEAN THEIR NEED VERSUS...

DR. RAUSH: VERSUS THE AMOUNT OF FOOD AVAILABLE. LETS BE BLUNT.

STEPHEN: Jesus Christ.

DR. RAUSH: PROJECT OUT THEIR RATE OF GROWTH...THERE'S A CRITICAL BALANCE...AND IT'S THE WASTE THAT KILLS US. LITERALLY...THEY USE...THEY USE MAYBE FIVE PERCENT OF THE FOOD AVAILABLE ON THE HUMAN BODY...AND THEN THE BODY IS USUALLY INTACT ENOUGH TO BE MOBILE WHEN IT REVIVES. THERE'S AN ECOLOGICAL IMBALANCE AND THEY'RE INCAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING...

COMM: WHAT ARE YOU PROPOSING?

Dr. RAUSH: WE HAVE TO BE UNEMOTIONAL. WE HAVE TO PROVIDE COUNTER MEASURES OR WE'RE ALL...

COMM.: COUNTER MEASURES?

DR. RAUSH: THEY CAN'T CONTROL THE RATE OF GROWTH AND CONSUMPTION. WE HAVE TO CONTROL IT FOR THEM!

COMM.: YOU'RE SUGGESTING THAT WE HELP THEM?

DR. RAUSH: BY HELPING THEM IN THIS CASE WE SAVE OURSELVES. I'M PROPOSING THAT CERTAIN NECESSARY MEASURES BE PUT INTO EFFECT AT ONCE. MEASURES APPLYING TO ALL OFFICIAL SEARCH AND DESTROY UNITS, WHILE THEY'RE STILL OPERATIVE. HOSPITALS, RESCUE STATIONS, AND ANY PRIVATE CITIZENS IN COOPERATION WITH THE MOBILE UNITS OF THE O.B.P. COULD REMOVE CORPSES OF THE RECENTLY DEAD. THEY SHOULD BE DELIVERED OVER TO THE AUTHORITIES FOR COLLECTION IN REFRIGERATED VANS. THEY SHOULD BE DECAPITATED TO PREVENT REVIVAL. THIS COLLECTION COULD BE STORED AND RATIONED FOR DISTRIBUTION AMONG THE INFECTED SOCIETY IN AN ATTEMPT TO CURB THE SENSELESS SLAUGHTER, THE SENSELESS SLAUGHTER OF OUR OWN SOCIETY. THE DISSECTION OF THE CORPSES CAN BE CARRIED OUT WITH RESPECT FOR THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN BODY. THE HEADS AND THE SKELETONS, WHENEVER POSSIBLE, COULD BE IDENTIFIED AND BURIED IN CONSECRATED GROUNDS.
