Summary: Hermaphrodite and under cover serial killer, Wednesday Lilith, discovers she’s become the sole survivor to an explosion of suicides, which spreads across the earth so completely that extinction is at hand. Even more unfathomable is the time in which it all happens - in one day...Wednesday.

Wednesday

“Sometimes - just sometimes - the loudest statement you can make, is when you say nothing at all.”

That was a piece of advice that Sam often gave to Wednesday when she was just a small child.

“She’s dreaming of the Brownie again – the Girl Scout.” Muttered Blind Sam in fear.

He once took two little girls called Cat Dub and Wednesday on a trip to the ocean. Sam’s friend, Ian, was a deep sea diver and an old army buddy of his. He invited him to see the mysteries of the deep. That was before he went blind. Once on Ian’s submersible, they were sheltered in a ridiculously thick ball of shiny metal and the submarine took him and his frail friends on a wondrous voyage to the depths of the Mariana Trench. Everything was so very beautiful there. However, when they glided to a silvery plain of mercury, they discovered a sea within a sea. The heavier water was spread across a wide sheet of liquid, chrome mercury. It’s mystic beautify was undescribable, but that’s when they first saw her - it. The being so out of place, it defied logic. But yet, there she was...the Brownie. The phantom Girl Scout. Her face was scared in red tattoos and her hair seemed to extrude a liquid vapor. After gazing on her perfect, innocent visage, her serene purity took his sight. But although left blind, Sam was gifted with “other” senses. And he saw.

“The boy who is not a boy - the girl who is not a girl - the person who is not a person.”

That was over twenty years ago, but today, the Girl Scout’s presence still frightened him, even when she was in someone else’s dream. The two small girls didn’t sustain any noticeable damages, although Ian claimed the two were permanently damaged by the odd pressure changes that sometimes affected deep sea travelers. Even so, the damage was so rare and slight that it seemed to have absolutely  no ill-effect on the happy children...or so it seemed.

“No. No, please don’t hide my Cat Dub.” Whimpered Wednesday in her fitful slumber.

Blind Sam, the trusty ringleader of the Apostle Carnival stood over Wednesday as she slept. He remembered when he first saw her. How her own mother was busy in the process of disposing of her. Born with the private parts of both male and female, Wednesday’s superstitious parents thought the toddler was a curse...a terrible secret. By the time Blind Sam had trekked through to the old farm house, it was apparent then, that Wednesday’s parents didn’t want to live under the burden of their personal curse one day longer. At any rate, he traced the toddler’s cries to the grain hut. There, the old carny man stole her, and by doing this, he saved her from a death intended to be delivered by her own mother’s hands. That was twenty four years ago from this day.

Wednesday was a slim person and despite her dual-gender condition, the hermaphrodite appeared to be quite an attractive woman. Her right eye sported an “Apostle” tattoo, which many of the impoverished women of the Apostle Carnival wore like proud badges.

“Sam...how long have you been standing there, old friend?” Asked Wednesday, while shaking the sand from her sleep trodden eyes.

“Long enough, girlie.”

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“You’re going out tonight again, aren’t you?”

“I - I need to take care of something in town. The carnival is closed tonight. You don’t need me here.” Replied Wednesday with a nervous slur in her voice.

“The townsfolk don’t like our kind. They think all carny folk are devil-bred freaks. But that’s not what I meant, Wednesday.”

“Well, don’t speak in riddles. What do you mean, Sam?”

“You know what I mean, girlie. ...haven’t you figured it out yet? I know - I know about your...addiction.”
