If there's too much money in the circle there's inflation (money loses value). In the beginning of the zombie plague money probably lost its value. But after the people are locked in, the money gets rare (even if you consider the money from the shops around). So there you are!
What I can't answer: Doesn't money allways need a counter-value like gold?
