I'm with you Vesh. I loved DOTD 04, but the original Dawn still ranks higher on my list of favorites. Nothing wrong with updating an old classic for a new generation of viewers. Runners or walkers, zombies are just plain cool. I don't happen to subscribe to that narrow perspective that the only true zombies are Romero shamblers. Bollocks.
Dawn 04 looks especially good in comparison to LOTD. Even though Dawn 04 had the whole "action movie" vibe, I still feel like it did a better job of developing the main characters and making us care about them. This is especially true in the uncut director's version. I truly cared what happened to Anna, Kenneth, Michael, CJ, etc. Especially CJ - consider the development of his character over the course of the film. Initially he's this ass who doesn't want to risk his position to help anyone and by the end he sacrifices himself for the survival of the others. Works for me.
Not to mention superior direction, editing, sound, acting... The effects were also better -- although its hard to fault GAR for this as Snyder was given more money to spend. LOTD wins in terms of gore, but that alone doesn't make a movie for me.
