The Island of Dr Romero
(© Eddie Poe)

Page 3

They came at him side by side. He squatted, his powerful leg muscles bunching, and sprang forward. His fists drove deep into flesh and bone, scrambling their brains; the zombies fell. Fingernails raked his skin and he whirled to drive his elbow into the soft face of another; it, too, fell.

The Avenger was surrounded.

He turned to try to keep those closest to him before him, but they were circling, too. He had to think of something- fast. A zombie leaped and landed on his back, its arms locking around his throat. He bent forward, holding onto the dead arms encircling his thick neck, and threw the zombie off. It landed on its back, rolled over onto its hands and knees, and started to get up.

The Avenger whirled and bent, grabbed the ankles of the zombie nearest him, and jerked it off its feet. Stepping back, he began to spin, still holding onto the zombie's ankles, and the zombie, lifted into the air, became a weapon with which he battered the others. They fell as struck, their recently reawakened brains no longer functioning. When the last of them had fallen, The Avenger swung the head of his "battering ram" against the nearest tree. It lay unmoving among the rest.

The Avenger ran to the sea and dove in; his thick arms slashed the dark, moonlit water. He reached the helicopter and pressed a button on his belt. The 'copter came down and he reached up and grabbed the dangling ladder, began to pull himself up, one rung at a time. He stopped halfway up and looked back at the island of Dr. Romero: it was little more than a silhouette, now. He climbed the rest of the way and settled into the pilot's seat, flipped a switch that automatically retracted the ladder.

Then he pushed a red button on a panel before him. On the beach, the Nullifier began to broadcast a signal that would disrupt and dissipate any Supernatural Force on the island. Romero was finished.

For now…
