If you recall, Dawn04 knocked Passion out of first for one week, then Passion came back. There were plenty of other films that did good box office out then. 2004 was, in general a much more competative BO year than 2005 has been.
Dawn '04 did more than twice as much business -- the fact that it got more advertising and support was probably indicative of the fact that the studio realized it was worth their investment. On the other hand, the fact that they dumped Land without much promotion means they thought it wasn't worth the money. The Land release was more timed to allow a Halloween DVD release than anything else.
