I think the Virus was always present and harmless until
the radiation mutated it. It still does not effect
living flesh UNTIL the mutated version is passed into
the flesh via zombie bite. It has to do with the
effect upon the recently dead that caused them to
rise all over the world, instantly... cause radiation.

The virus can't be airborne.
Hypothetical experiment. Researchers in an enclosed
environment, a clean room are working on some
computer chips or alien artifacts, one dies of a
mass coronary heart attack and dies.. he reanimates
as a zombie. The virus was in the body all along,
the radiation is a gama type that can penetrate most
any material and mutates the virus.. causing zombieism.
Then the zombie could bite any living human and transmit
the virus, causeing death and another zombie.

Only EXCEPTION to the rule would be in a steel
submarine or one other case which I can't reveal
due to it is a spoiler for my screenplay.
