It's possible because the remake was such a hit. In other words, they want more $.
"Day of the Dead" cannot be a sequel because how can a 1985 film be a sequel to a 2004 film?
A sequel to a film nowadays would have to have the same actors in it. Therefore, a Day remake wouldn't make too much sense if it DID NOT* the same cast.
*I originally wrote "had" instead of "DID NOT". My bad.
