Exactly. Plus, it would be hard to go from an economy that is strictly currency based to a barter based economy. It is something that would have helped to run the city because they had to have a set worth on each individual good. Cash is basically the familiar intermediary. Plus, you are still bartering in a way.
Example: good or service =$=trade for goods
