Point taken. The rules of the remake should apply. As for the characters, I have looked at this from all angles that I can see and here is my take on what I think the director was trying to do.

First off in Dawn '78 there were only 4 characters to deal with several emotions. The people sort of changed over a timeline that we could not really keep up with.

Fran Starts out all sort of freaked out and by the end has become the strong one.

Roger starts out freaked out and seems to barely maintain unless doing something stupid like playing games with the undead which he does alot.

Peter is the strong one in the begining who is full of anger and later becomes the true hero in my opinion.

Stephen starts out as the one you don't really like. He can't shoot, he does not seem to really care about anyone but himself for the most part. But in the end he starts to become more likeable and dies a hero's death.

In the remake you don't have to deal with changing character. You have a small army or characters and you can see peices of the old characters in each one.

Now I am not saying this is better but I think it was a try at being better. I think of it more as seperation of characters rather then replacing them.
